(Emporia, KS) — One in four older adults has a fall each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). However, according to Newman Regional Health, falls are not a normal part of aging and can be prevented. Newman Regional Health’s Stepping On program, offered for Lyon County and surrounding area residents, has been researched and proven to reduce falls by 30%. Registrations are currently being accepted for the next Stepping On workshop scheduled for Thursday, September 9, in the Flint Hills Conference Room at Newman Regional Health from 1:00-3:00pm. Stepping On is a 7-week program scheduled every Thursday through October 21, 2021.

In just 7 weekly sessions, Stepping On gives participants strategies for avoiding falls including balance and strength exercises, home safety check suggestions, medication review, and more. Guest experts including a physical therapist and pharmacist, as well as others, visit with participants over the course of the seven sessions to provide fall prevention information and strategies. Weekly session topics include:
• exercises
• moving about safely
• home hazards
• vision, footwear, and community safety
• bone health, medication, and sleeping better
• getting out and about

The workshop is designed specifically for people 60 years of age or older and those who have fallen or have a fear of falling. Participants can expect to finish the workshop with more strength, better balance, and a feeling of confidence and independence.

If you or someone you know is interested in learning more or getting registered for the upcoming Stepping On workshop, visit newmanrh.org/steppingon or call (620) 343-6800 ext. 21043.
