What is the difference between a family medicine provider and an internal medicine provider?
Family medicine physicians provide primary care to both adults and children. Family medicine providers are trained to diagnose and treat a wide range of medical conditions, but they may not have the same level of expertise as an internist in a particular area of medicine.
An internist is a doctor who specializes in the care of adults. Internists have more training than family medicine practitioners in the diagnosis and treatment of complex medical conditions. They are also more likely to be involved in research and teaching.
When should I see an internal medicine provider?
If you are an adult with a chronic medical condition, such as heart disease, diabetes, or lung disease, you should see an internist for regular care. If you are experiencing a new or worsening medical problem, you should also see an internist.
