Summer Nurse Externship Program

Our Nurse Externship program provides a summer learning experience tor college students who have completed their junior year of nursing school. The nurse Extern will work side by side with a licensed RN preceptor for six weeks. This is a PAID program.

Potential primary areas for student rotations include:

  • Emergency Department
  • Medical/Surgical/Telemetry
  • Obstetrics
  • Surgical Services
  • Intensive Care Unit
  • Clinical Decision Unit
  • Inpatient Rehab

Qualifications:

Nursing students who are actively enrolled, and in good standing, in an Accredited Nursing Program, and will graduate December 2025 or May 2026.

This position provides a summer learning experience for qualified nursing students. The nurse extern will work side by side with a licensed Registered Nurse (RN) preceptor for approximately six weeks. Final nursing unit assignments will be made in May. Assignments are subject to change due to staffing/preceptor needs of the organization.

The Nurse Extern will work under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) to provide patient care.

  • Working within the nursing process to deliver direct nursing care across various age groups, which may include neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations.
  • Performing assessments and nursing procedures specific to areas of practice safely, efficiently and with technical skill. • Administering medications safely per organizational policy.
  • Documentation of pertinent assessments and interventions.
  • Nurse Externs will work the same shift as their RN preceptor which could include days, nights, and weekend shifts. Please let us know of any barriers that would prevent you from meeting this expectation.

  • Get 2 faculty members to complete the form and recommend you.
  • Scan the forms into pdf format and upload to you your formal application

Step Two


Six weeks of paid time with RN preceptor.


  • Final nursing unit assignments will be made in May
  • Assignments are subject to change due to staffing/preceptor needs of the organization.
  • All duties will be performed under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN).
  • Work within the nursing process to provide direct nursing care to assigned patients.
  • Patient care assignment may include Neonate, Pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric age groups.
