Hernias are a common condition that occur when an organ or tissue pushes through a weak spot in the muscle or connective tissue. While some hernias cause few or no symptoms, others can lead to discomfort, pain, or visible bulges that may worsen with physical activity. If your hernia is small and not causing problems, your doctor may recommend monitoring it over time. However, larger or painful hernias often require surgical repair to prevent complications and restore comfort.

Common hernia symptoms

  • A noticeable bulge in the abdomen, groin, or torso
  • Pain, pressure, or aching at the site of the bulge
  • Discomfort that worsens with any activity that puts a strain on the abdomen
  • A painful bulge that doesn't reduce in size when you lay down and rest
  • A tugging sensation of the scrotum around the testicles

Types of hernias treated at Newman Regional Health

  • Inguinal hernia: develops in the groin, where the abdomen meets the thigh

  • Ventral hernia: occurs in the abdominal wall, often at the site of a previous surgery

  • Hiatal hernia: occurs in the diaphragm, allowing part of the stomach to push upward into the chest

Treatment Options

  • Open Surgery: This is the time-tested method, where the surgeon makes an incision to access the hernia and repair the defect using stitches and mesh. The procedure may be preferred for complex hernias or those with significant scar tissue. However, it requires a larger incision that may be more painful and require a longer recovery time.
  • da Vinci Robot-assisted surgery: Robotic-assisted hernia surgery is a minimally invasive approach that allows the surgeon to operate through tiny incisions. While the procedure results in less pain, faster recovery, and shorter hospital stays, the da Vinci system is not suitable for all types of hernia repair.

Taking Charge of Your Recovery

A successful hernia repair requires commitment to recovery. This includes following your doctor's instructions for pain management, wound care, and activity restrictions. Physical therapy may also be recommended to strengthen your core muscles and prevent future hernias.

Robot Assisted Surgery

Newman Regional Health is equipped with the latest robotic-assisted surgical equipment, the da Vinci Xi robotic surgery system. This high-tech device enhances surgeons ability to perform complex surgical procedures through precision instruments in a less invasive manner than open surgery.
