At Newman Regional Health, our internal medicine providers take a comprehensive approach to adult health, caring for the whole person rather than just treating symptoms. From managing diabetes and high blood pressure to coordinating specialty care and preventive screenings, our providers are dedicated to supporting long-term health and wellness.

Internal medicine providers are experienced with managing complex conditions including:

  • Heart disease
  • Hypertension
  • Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Lung disease
  • Cancer
  • Autoimmune diseases

What is the difference between a family medicine provider and an internal medicine provider?

Family medicine physicians provide primary care to both adults and children. Family medicine providers are trained to diagnose and treat a wide range of medical conditions, but they may not have the same level of expertise as an internist in a particular area of medicine.

An internist is a doctor who specializes in the care of adults. Internists have more training than family medicine practitioners in the diagnosis and treatment of complex medical conditions. They are also more likely to be involved in research and teaching.

When should I see an internal medicine provider?

If you are an adult with a chronic medical condition, such as heart disease, diabetes, or lung disease, you should see an internist for regular care. If you are experiencing a new or worsening medical problem, you should also see an internist.
