Newman Regional Health Offers Virtual Breastfeeding Class During COVID-19 Pandemic
(Emporia, KS) — Due to the increasing concerns related to COVID-19 and visitor limitations at Newman Regional Health, the Women’s Life Center is offering a virtual breastfeeding class to temporarily replace in person support groups while continuing to provide lactation support and ensure nutritional goals are met for mother and baby.

The virtual breastfeeding class is free for registered participants and is offered every Tuesday from 10:00am-12:00pm. New mothers and those that have recently delivered amid the COVID19 pandemic are offered this resource through the Women’s Life Center at Newman Regional Health. The virtual class is led by certified lactation consultant and Newman Regional Health Care Coordination staff member, Gina Slayden, RN, IBCLC.

Mothers interested in taking advantage of this opportunity are asked to visit https://www.newmanrh.org/breastfeedingclass/ and complete the provided registration form. Participants can join virtually at any time during the 10:00am-12:00pm offered session with a smartphone or desktop/laptop computer with video and audio connectivity.

“In absence of the breastfeeding groups previously held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, this time is set aside so that we may continue to provide support and encouragement to breastfeeding mothers,” said Gina Slayden, RN, IBCLC. “We want to make sure we are doing everything we can to make breastfeeding successful and we encourage mothers to join in and ask questions or share concerns.”

The class is designed to help facilitate a climate of support for breastfeeding mothers while answering questions and providing an avenue for moms to communicate with one another. Frequently addressed topics during breastfeeding support groups include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Benefits, techniques, and challenges of breastfeeding
  • Questions related to breast pumps
  • Bottle feeding
