Today marks National Rural Health Day, a time to celebrate the Power of Rural and recognize the incredible contributions of healthcare systems across rural America. Emporia and Lyon County have much to be proud of.

Rural America is home to some of the most innovative health systems in the country, and Newman Regional Health exemplifies that innovation. As one of approximately 1,300 Critical Access Hospitals nationwide, it serves as the backbone of acute care in our rural community. Since its first day in 1921, the hospital has been owned by the citizens of Lyon County and provides care to Lyon and six surrounding counties. Newman Regional Health’s team of over 600 employees celebrate together today. These are the individuals who serve the community daily with empathy, humility, and integrity.

Newman Regional Health is a Level IV Trauma Center – open 24/7, offering robotic surgery using the da Vinci Surgical System and Mako SmartRobotics, a PCI-accredited Cath lab, imaging and lab services newly equipped with a state-of-the-art Aquilion ONE/GENESIS Edition CT Scanner, and a top-quality inpatient rehabilitation unit. Meanwhile offering a full slate of exceptional healthcare services through the Newman Regional Health Medical Partners rural health clinic including Family Medicine, Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, OB/GYN, Cardiology, and General Surgery.

Innovation in Action
Recently, Newman Regional Health received a $485,000 grant from the Patterson Family Foundation to expand telehealth services. This two-year project will bring specialty care to Emporia in cardiology, endocrinology, infectious disease, high-risk obstetrics, and behavioral health—addressing the top needs identified in the recent community health assessment. This study revealed that the top needs of our community are access to mental health services, chronic disease management, maternal care, and the reduction of costly transfers. The Patterson Family Foundation’s support will have a transformative impact on rural Kansas.

Why Rural Healthcare Matters

Deeply rooted in community, rural healthcare works differently. The providers at Newman Regional Health care for their friends, family, and neighbors every single day. This unique connection is what makes rural healthcare special. On this National Rural Health Day, appreciation goes to every doctor, nurse, tech, housekeeper, and volunteer at Newman Regional Health and across rural Kansas. Their dedication ensures world-class care without leaving home.

For those who haven’t had a check-up recently- visit our brand-new website, launched this week, to learn more or schedule an appointment with a provider. Last month alone, 173 new patients joined the primary care clinic, a testament to the trust placed in local healthcare. A message of gratitude and thanks to our local community for their support and trust in the care provided right here at home.   Happy National Rural Health Day! The Power of Rural is strong in Emporia.
