Newman Regional Health Pulmonary Rehabilitation celebrates one year of helping patients breathe easier.

(EMPORIA, KS) A Little more than a year ago, the Pulmonary Rehabilitation program at Newman Regional Health graduated their first patient. During the past year, the team reviewed more than 50 referral applicants and graduated more than a dozen patients from the program.
The Pulmonary Rehabilitation team employs a medically supervised, comprehensive program tailored to individuals with chronic lung diseases like COPD, asthma, pulmonary fibrosis, and post-COVID respiratory conditions.
The program helps patients learn breathing techniques and strategies to control shortness of breath, cough, and mucus and to gradually build strength, stamina, and cardiovascular fitness.
“The primary goals of pulmonary rehab include improving symptoms, restoring functional capabilities, improving self-management skills, and enhancing overall health-related quality of life,” says Donny Bellomy, Director of the Cardio-Pulmonary Department of Newman Regional Health.
Connie Coble, RN, BSN, Pulmonary Rehabilitation Case Manager explains, “We hear from our participants nearly every session about the ways pulmonary rehab has positively impacted their lives, and their gratitude is heartwarming. In fact, we received a special gift of daisies from a grateful patient last week! We are thankful for the flowers, and for all the patients who have participated, worked hard, and helped us through this first year.”
Medicare covers many patients who suffer from COPD, Emphysema, chronic bronchitis and Post-Covid 19 conditions affecting respiratory status. Many commercial insurances cover additional conditions such as Asthma, Cystic fibrosis, Pulmonary fibrosis, pre-operative, and post-operative conditioning.
A patient must be referred by their medical provider for evaluation by the Pulmonary Rehabilitation team to be accepted into the program.
March 9-15, 2025, is recognized as Pulmonary Rehabilitation Week nationwide and is dedicated to create awareness of this important healthcare service.
