The month of June is dedicated to raising awareness for issues impacting the health of men and boys. Men’s Health Month, now in its 24th year, is focused on encouraging men to make their health a priority.

Silent Crisis

The Men’s Health Network says there is a silent crisis in our country regarding men’s health.

“There is a silent health crisis in America,” Dr. David Gremillion with the Men’s Health Network said. “It’s the fact that, on average, American men live sicker and die younger than American women.”

Men die at higher rates than women from nine of the top 10 causes of death and are the victims of over 92 percent of workplace deaths. According to the CDC, in 1920, women lived, on average, one year longer than men. Now, on average, die almost five years earlier than women.

Even though more males than females are born, 105 versus 100, by age 35, women outnumber men.

Prevention

Prevention is key to improving the health and wellness of men. Men do not see physicians for a physical exam nearly as often as women and men are more likely to be uninsured than women.

Men should have a yearly physical to catch any health issues early. The following health screenings are also recommended:

  • Blood pressure screening one time per year
  • Cholesterol screening once every five years
  • Diabetes screening every three years unless you are overweight then it should be yearly
  • Colon cancer screening if you are between the ages of 50 to 75, earlier if you have a family history of colon cancer
  • Dental and eye exam one time per year
  • Prostate cancer screening for men over the age of 50

Every Day Health

Making healthy choices every day can help improve health. Both men and women are encouraged to get at least 30 minutes of exercise in each day. Exercise will keep your heart healthy and improve your general health.

If you are a smoker, it is time to kick the habit. There are many resources to help with smoking cessation. Talk with your health provider about medications to help. There are many tools and tips to help you quit. Quitting is a journey but your health is worth it.

Healthy eating habits can help you maintain a healthy lifestyle. Newman Regional Health offers medical nutritional therapy for people with a medical diagnosis such as diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, obesity, or a specific nutritional need. Our registered dietician will work with you individually to create a realistic meal plan.

Remember that anyone can assist in the men’s health movement and help is not limited by gender. Anyone can be supportive and help men make that first step toward a healthier life.
