Newman Regional Health Foundation receives grants to support pharmacy expansion
Newman Regional Health Foundation has been awarded a $150,000 grant from the Walter S. and Evan C. Jones Testamentary Trust, US Trust, Bank of America, NA, Trustee and a $100,000 grant from the Trusler Foundation, managed and operated by ESB Financial and the Emporia Community Foundation. The two grants were awarded to support Newman Regional Health’s pharmacy, which is being upgraded and expanded to comply with new regulations governing the compounding of sterile and non-sterile medications and the handling and storage of hazardous medications.
The pharmacy expansion project has been planned since the new regulations were published in 2017 and will include new work stations, air-handling systems, and a storage facility for hazardous medications. The purposes of the new regulations are to improve work-place conditions for pharmacy employees who regularly are in contact with a wide range of medicinal preparations and to improve the quality assurance of the preparation of medications for hospital patients.
Pharmacy Director, Ashley Edwards, PharmD, expressed her appreciation to the Jones Trust and the Trusler Foundation for their generous awards. “Newman Regional Health provides comprehensive pharmacy services for our patients. Our current facility is small and could not be adapted to meet the requirements of the new regulations, which go into effect on December 1, 2019. We need an expanded floor plan to accommodate the new work stations and other systems that are required by the new regulations. These grants, totaling $250,000, will fund a significant portion of the cost of the renovation and expansion of the pharmacy to meet those new requirements and will result in improved services for our patients and co-workers.”
Foundation Director, Michael Perigo, also expressed his appreciation to both the Jones Trust and the Trusler Foundation for their grants. “The Walter S. and Evan C. Jones Testamentary Trust and the Trusler Foundation are important philanthropic partners in the funding of this project.
We are grateful to them and to their grant committees for their vision, financial support, and investment in improved healthcare outcomes for patients of Newman Regional Health.”
The project is scheduled to be completed in November 2019.
