The Emporia Gazette used the Winston Churchill quote, "We live not by what we have, but by what we give," on March 5, 1922 to describe George Newman’s generous contribution.  The original 81 bed hospital was built largely as the result of a fifty thousand dollar bequest left by Mr. George Newman, a local businessman.  Additional funds were raised with a two year tax levy, and the hospital opened on March 6th, 1922.  The hospital was named in honor of both Mr. Newman and the county. Newman Regional Health is owned by the people of Lyon County and operates on a not-for-profit basis. The hospital is self supporting, and does not receive county tax funds.

Planning for better facilities included the addition of the East wing, built in 1951, the West wing in 1963 and the South wing in 1980.  A 5.9 million dollar renovation of the first floor was completed in the spring of 1996, increasing convenience and accessibility for outpatients by relocating nearly all outpatient services to the same area of the hospital.  1996 was also the year the Newman Medical Plaza, a 70,000 square foot physician’s office building, was built west of the hospital to better attract and retain needed physicians to our community, and to provide a convenient location for patients to receive care. A connector building between the Newman Medical Plaza and the hospital opened in November, 2002, which included a new Same Day Surgery unit and registration area. The Central Care Cancer Center opened in August, 2003, providing Emporia and the surrounding area with cancer care close to home. In addition, since the hospital has opened, there has been a nursing school, currently the Emporia State University Newman Division of Nursing, located on the east side of the hospital campus.

Since 1922, Newman Regional Health has been a vital part of healthcare for a seven county area.  Working with other healthcare providers, the hospital will continue to be a leader in improving the health of our community.

"They saw the best equipped hospital in the West.  They saw a beautiful building architecturally, and they saw an interior decorated with taste, altogether a thing of beauty that shall be a joy forever." Emporia Gazette, March 6, 1922, on the open house.
