FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Newman Regional Health Recognized for Higher Quality and Cost-Efficiency in Maternity Care

(Emporia, KS) — Newman Regional Health is proud to be recognized by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas (BCBSKS) with a Blue Distinction® Centers+ (BDC+) for Maternity Care designation, as part of the Blue Distinction Specialty Care program. To earn this designation, each facility must deliver quality care, safely and cost-effectively.

“Newman Regional Health is honored to be a Blue Distinction Center for Maternity Care since 2017. The Women’s Life Center is committed to providing high quality care to all of our mothers and newborns and we appreciate that Blue Cross has recognized this. Lyon County is lucky to have such an amazing team of providers, nursing staff, surgery, and anesthesia to care for our community,” said Bobby Johnson, BSN, Director of Women’s Life Center at Newman Regional Health.

The Blue Distinction Centers for Maternity Care program plays a key role in the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association’s (BCBSA) National Health Equity Strategy aimed at reducing racial health disparities across the care spectrum and improving patient outcomes for all Americans. To align with this strategy, the Blue Distinction Centers for Maternity Care program enhanced its quality and measurement standards to recognize higher-quality facilities that have taken action to respond effectively to obstetric emergencies, reduce racial disparities, and improve maternal health outcomes.

Based on data from the current designation cycle, facilities designated under the Blue Distinction Centers for Maternity Care program demonstrate higher-quality care compared to non-Blue Distinction Center facilities, with overall average rates of 26% lower episiotomies, 60% fewer elective deliveries and 17% lower cesarean births—all of which point to healthier outcomes for patients. BDC+ designated facilities also exhibited an average savings of 21% for maternity care.

“The provider and patient experience is powerful and we are proud that Newman Regional Health has put in the work to ensure their patients have this level of care,” said Matt All, President/CEO, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas. “Each facility recognized as a Blue Distinction Center is meeting rigorous quality metrics in all phases of their maternity care programs and, in doing so, delivering better care for our members and all Kansans.”

The Blue Distinction Centers for Maternity Care program’s selection criteria was devised to close clinical care gaps and reduce inequities that persist throughout the maternal care spectrum. The selection criteria includes components of BCBSA’s Maternal Health Equity Actions, which dismantle the cultural, operational and structural barriers that have created inequities that persist in maternal care.

Meet Libby Chanley

Meet Elizabeth “Libby” Chanley, nominated for the Kansas Hospital Association Healthcare Worker of the Year.

Libby’s family moved to Kansas from Grand Rapids, Michigan when she was 5. During these early, formative years, she was deeply influenced by the human condition as she and her mother volunteered at a homeless shelter in Topeka. These experiences guided her to pursue a career in social work.

Libby graduated from Emporia State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology followed by a Master’s Degree in Social Work from Washburn University. Libby’s efforts were rewarded with a license to practice. After earning her LMSW, she worked in the child welfare arena advocating for foster children for more than ten years.

Today, Libby contributes to the successful transition of patients from the hospital by developing and implementing safe discharge plans. She also works directly with patients after provider visits with our Chronic Care Management Program.

Libby has dedicated her career to the well-being of others because her faith and belief is that every person deserves compassion and respect regardless of their circumstances.

She finds that her most proud moment is when she and her husband witness their 5 girls treat others with the same values as their mother.

In her nomination narrative, hospital leadership provided insight as to how Libby has served the mission of Newman Regional Health and our community for nearly a decade, meeting the social, emotional, and economic needs of our most vulnerable patients and families.

“Libby functions as a boundary spanner, facilitating communication among healthcare providers and community partners that offer critical social support for patients and the management of their acute and chronic health conditions. Boots on the ground, she has valuable insight and familiarity that can make all the difference in delivering effective care that addresses unique individual needs. Daily she tackles the inequitable distribution of resources and access to safe housing, healthcare, and food security to improve the health and well-being of individuals, families, and our community,” says Cathy Pimple MS, DNP, NE-CE Chief Administrative Officer, Newman Regional Health.

“Just last week, Libby secured a refrigerator for a mother caring for her child whose medication required refrigeration. She also found wheelchair-accessible transportation for out-of-town doctor appointments.” shares Ester Knobloch, Quality Manager. “It is an honor to work alongside Libby and witness daily the stories she shapes.”

“Libby is selfless and always positive. Regardless of any situation, she will ensure the patient leaves in a better situation than they arrived” states Lucas Markowitz, Director of Care Coordination. “She is truly the best social worker I have ever worked with.”

Libby, although humble in her accomplishments, has been recognized by organizational leadership, medical staff, and community stakeholders for the significant contributions she has made within our hospital system and community. Clinical teams of every discipline and setting make mention of her unwavering commitment and acknowledge her ability to serve as a catalyst between the healthcare system and community partners improving the daily living of others in our community.

Libby keeps the team focused on patients and families and how to overcome disparities and improve health.  Commonly, she visits patients in their homes to better understand the environment that impacts the management of care. She influences the work of our clinical teams through information sharing on aspects that are not visible within the four walls of our healthcare system.

Libby understands that every moment matters, and she approaches interactions as high-stake encounters. She is always willing to do the uncomfortable and inconvenient to reduce the suffering of others. Authentically, she intentionally listens and affirms the humanity and dignity of everyone. Clinical professionals desire to team with Libby, knowing she will shape the memory of how our patients and their families will look back on their care.

Libby motivates the care team members in both the hospital and clinic settings daily.  In addition to her role as a hospital social worker, she has facilitated the work of both the Chronic Care Management Program and Community Care Team Program. Her influence is also well-known by our community care partners. Her personal joy through human connections and endless efforts to make a difference is remarkable.

Hand Hygiene Tips

Follow These Hand Hygiene Tips to Help Keep Yourself and Others Safe

By: Katarina Knoff

Handwashing is the number one way to stop the spread of viruses, cold and flu. However, the unfortunate truth is that 95% of people fail to wash their hands long enough to kill harmful bacteria, according to a study published in LiveScience. During this ongoing global crisis, properly washing your hands is a crucial step to stop the spread of the virus and to protect yourself and those around you.

Here are the recommended steps to wash and sanitize your hands. When done correctly, both strategies are very effective in stopping the spread of bacteria.

Steps to Properly Wash Hands

  1. Wet hands with running water-This can be any temperature, both warm and cold water will kill viruses as long as you use soap.
  2. Soap– Apply a generous amount of soap all over your hands, including the backs and fingertips.
  3. Scrub and Lather Hands- Rub your hands and wash for a minimum of 20 seconds. Don’t forget to clean under fingernails and jewelry. Take special care to wash all fingertips because people often put their fingers on their eyes, nose and mouth, which is how the virus spreads.
  4. Rinse Hands- Return both hands to running water and wash off the soap.
  5. Dry Hands– Completely dry away all water from your hands. Germs spread easier from wet skin to dry skin, so make sure there is no extra moisture. Disposable towels and air dryers are preferred to ordinary hand towels to avoid spreading germs.

Using Sanitizer

Sometimes when you are out and about, sanitizing hands can be a great alternative if you do not have access to a sink. It is recommended to use a sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Rub it into your hands for at least 20 seconds to ensure full coverage.

When to Wash or Sanitize Your Hands

  • After returning home from any public outing, including grocery stores, work, school, being outside, hospitals, nursing homes, etc.
  • Immediately after using the restroom.
  • After shaking hands during flu season and virus outbreaks.
  • Throughout the food preparation process. This includes before, during and after preparing food (raw food especially).
  • Before eating anything
  • Before and after caring for someone at home who is sick with symptoms of vomiting or diarrhea.
  • Before and after treating a cut or wound.
  • After changing diapers or cleaning up a child who has used the toilet.
  • After blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing.
  • After touching an animal, animal feed or animal waste.
  • After handling pet food or pet treats.
  • After touching garbage.
  • After putting on your shoes.
  • After using public computers, touching public tables and countertops, cash and coins, other people’s phones, etc.

Newman Regional Health Surgeon Performs First Robotic-Assisted Surgery in Lyon County

Newman Regional Health announces their first robotic-assisted surgery was performed on June 8, 2022 by Newman Regional Health Medical Partners general surgeon, Dr. Tim Harris, together with proctoring physician, Dr. Jeremy Howes. The surgery was a cholecystectomy performed with the fourth generation da Vinci Xi surgical system, Intuitive Surgical’s most capable and advanced instrumentation.

“This day marks yet another monumental and milestone moment in Newman Regional Health’s 100-year history.”

Bob Wright, Newman Regional Health CEO

The da Vinci Xi is a surgical robot for minimally invasive procedures. It enhances surgical performance by creating a natural extension of the surgeon’s eyes and hands. At Newman Regional Health, the services that will benefit from this system include general surgery, urology, obstetrics and gynecology.
Robotic surgeries are preferred for certain procedures over conventional laparoscopic or open procedures for the following reasons:

  • decreased post-operative pain,
  • decreased use of narcotic pain medication,
  • decreased length-of-stay for hospital post-operative admission,
  • better visualization due to the 3D high-definition views, and
  • a greater range of motion due to the ergonomics of the robot versus laparoscopic instruments.

“I’m very excited to have robotics in the community. This availability will keep more surgeries local as well as enhance recruitment for new surgeons in the years ahead.”

Dr. Harris, general surgeon in Emporia for 30+ years

Physicians utilizing the da Vinci Xi for surgical cases are already proficient in laparoscopic surgery and are required to complete additional training to be fully certified, including:

  • a two-day surgeon-led education in Houston, TX with classroom and cadaver training,
  • simulator training with the surgical team at their home hospital, and
  • completion of at least two cases supervised by a highly experienced robotic surgeon at their home hospital.

Newman Regional Health is one of only three Critical Access Hospitals in Kansas to now offer robotic-assisted surgical procedures. Patients are encouraged to visit www.newmanrh.org/davinci to learn more or speak directly with their healthcare provider for more information on the robotic-assisted surgical procedures available at Newman Regional Health.

“The initiation of the robotics program at Newman Regional Health is such a benefit to the health needs of those within Lyon and surrounding counties. This will provide our community with the most effective and less invasive options for their surgical care. The improved visualization and precision in our dissection during surgeries will help us continue to improve patient outcomes for years to come.”

Dr. Rebecca Douglass, Newman Regional Health Medical Partners general surgeon.

Cassie Hammond, RN honored with The DAISY Award® For Extraordinary Nurses.

May 11, 2022

NEWMAN REGIONAL HEALTH’S FIRST DAISY AWARD PRESENTED TO EXTRAORDINARY NURSE

(Emporia, KS) — Cassie Hammond, RN of Newman Regional Health’s Women’s Life Center was recently honored with The DAISY Award® For Extraordinary Nurses.  The award is part of the DAISY Foundation’s programs to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day.

The submitted nomination read, “Cassie was my main nurse during the day when I was in labor (I had my son later that night).  However, I just really appreciated her helpfulness, encouragement, and wisdom.  Right away when she introduced herself to me, she told me that she was going to be my advocate, in that we were going to try everything possible to have the labor go as I was hoping.  She worked with me on certain positions to help my labor go more smoothly, as well.  She was always kind and answered my questions whenever I had them.”

The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, CA, and was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes.  Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little-known but not uncommon auto-immune disease.  The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.

Said Bonnie Barnes, FAAN, Doctor of Humane Letters (h.c) and Co-Founder of The DAISY Foundation, “When Patrick was critically ill, our family experienced first-hand the remarkable skill and care nurses provide patients every day and night.  Yet these unsung heroes are seldom recognized for the super-human work they do.  The kind of work the nurses at Newman Regional Healthcare called on to do every day epitomizes the purpose of The DAISY Award.”

Jim Reineke, Interim Chief Nursing Officer at Newman Regional Health, says, “It’s exciting for Newman Regional Health to join the DAISY family and to recognize the amazing care being provided by the nursing team.  I can’t think of a more deserving first-ever Newman Regional Health DAISY winner than Cassie; she truly exemplifies the spirit of DAISY with every encounter, every moment, and every patient.”

In addition to the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses, the Foundation expresses gratitude to the nursing profession internationally in over 5,000 healthcare facilities and schools of nursing with recognition of Nurse-led Teams, Nurse Leaders, Nurses Advancing Health Equity, Nursing Faculty, Nursing Students, Lifetime Achievement in Nursing and through the J. Patrick Barnes Grants for Nursing Research and Evidence-Based Practice Projects, Medical Mission Grants and their new Health Equity Grant programs. Horizon™ DXA bone densitometry system from Hologic

NEWMAN REGIONAL HEALTH NOW PROVIDING THE LATEST IN BONE HEALTH ASSESSMENT

(Emporia, KS) — Newman Regional Health has expanded its health and wellness services for men and women with the addition of the Horizon™ DXA bone densitometry system from Hologic.

Osteoporosis is a growing healthcare crisis affecting millions of men and women worldwide.  Healthcare costs associated with osteoporosis are staggering, and the effect on a patient’s quality of life can be devastating.  Only about 10% of women over the age of 65 have normal bone mass.  77% of American women with osteoporosis are undiagnosed (and therefore untreated).1  Fortunately, osteoporosis is detectable and treatable and testing is safe and non-invasive.

The imaging technology of the Horizon™ DXA system provides superb image quality with advanced diagnostic tools to support early detection and treatment of osteoporosis.  Horizon enables new dimensions in care, including greater insights into biomechanical strength, visualization of calcification in the abdominal aorta that can indicate heart disease, lumbar spine and proximal femur studies, BMD measurements of the entire skeleton, atypical femur fracture (AFF) assessment, and many other clinical applications.

“We are grateful for the financial support provided by the Walter S. & Evan C. Jones Testamentary Trust, William and Aloha Preston Family Trust, Capitol Federal Foundation, and the Lyon County Commission,” stated Bob Wright, CEO at Newman Regional Health.  “Through their generosity, our hospital now has the technology to help our physicians and advanced practice providers diagnose and treat osteoporosis and heart disease sooner than ever before.”

The addition of a bone densitometry system completes a $600,000+ investment in the W.S. & E.C. Jones Breast Care Center at Newman Regional Health.  Other updates include the addition of 3D mammography and stereotactic breast ultrasound completed in February 2022.

Newman Regional Health is hosting a Business After Hours event on April 28th at 5:00pm, in partnership with the Emporia Chamber of Commerce, where the public will be invited to tour the space and learn about the enhanced equipment and services provided within the W.S. & E.C. Jones Breast Care Center.

For more information on bone densitometry or to schedule an appointment, speak with your healthcare provider or call (620) 343-6800 x21167.

Employees Anniversaries 2021

HEADLINE FOR 2022

(Emporia, KS) — On February 18, 2021, Newman Regional Health recognized a combined 940+ years of service with a celebration honoring approximately 64 employees. Each year, Newman Regional Health recognizes staff members that have been with the organization for a milestone number of years.

“Our employees are celebrated after completing five years of service and every five years of service that they provide thereafter,” says Bob Wright, CEO at Newman Regional Health. “It’s important that we stop and recognize employees who achieve these milestones. They are the ones who help shape our culture and guide those who look to them as formal and informal leaders throughout their career. To have the opportunity to tell each of them how proud I was of them for their dedication and personal sacrifice during this pandemic was truly one of the high points of my career. Newman Regional Health is what it is today because of these individuals.”

“Not only are we congratulating our employees during this time, but through this event, we are enabling our employees to become closer with one another,” says Director of Business Development, McKenzie Cinelli. “They get an opportunity to converse with so many from outside their own departments. It’s neat to see a group like this supporting and congratulating one another. There’s no doubt that it increases employee morale and creates excitement among all other staff.”

The Newman Regional Health STAR (Standards, Awards, and Recognitions) Committee is responsible for the planning of this event. McKenzie mentions that none of this would have been possible without that group and their commitment to the employees, organization, and work environment. “They have a passion for making Newman Regional Health a workplace of choice, for both current and prospective employees,” said Cinelli.
