Patient Meal Service
Nutrition is a very important aspect of your recovery. All patients must have a diet ordered by their physician before any food is served. For patients on modified diets, food choices may be restricted or limited. Patient meals are delivered by nursing to rooms at 7:30 AM, 11:30 AM, and 5 PM. For patients who have been having tests or on diets that have just been advanced, meals are delivered by nursing as they are needed.
Patient Menus
Our goal is to offer you a choice of menu selections. Nutrition services staff will send a menu to your room if your physician orders a diet for you. They will help you select your menu choices if needed. If you are admitted later in the day or your diet has been changed, you will receive a menu at the following meal to make selections for the next day.
Patient Snacks
Patients on some modified diets will automatically receive snacks between meals at 10 AM, 2 PM, and 8 PM. Snacks such as cookies, crackers, milk, juice, and ice cream are available until 8 PM, if allowed on your diet. Some snacks are available after 8 PM in limited amounts. Anytime you wish to have a snack, just ask your nurse. You may purchase vending machine items if they are included on your diet.
Patient Portion Sizes and Number of Servings
We realize you may be overwhelmed with the portion sizes of food received. We are obligated through government regulation to serve you a well balanced diet with a basic amount of servings each day. It is necessary for us to include 6-11 servings of grains, cereals, and breads, 3-5 vegetable servings, 2-4 fruit servings, 2-3 milk and cheese servings, and 2-3 servings meats, poultry, fish, beans, and eggs, unless we are limited by the diet your physician has ordered. A standard size for most items is ½ cup.
Food Preferences
Illness may cause a change in your appetite. Food may not sound, look, smell, or taste appealing to you. There are many factors that play a role in appetite. Some factors may be your current condition which may cause your appetite to be poor or nonexistent. Occasionally the sight or smell of foods can cause you to become nauseated. You may be on a modified diet that will not allow you to have some of your favorite foods or seasonings or the amounts you are used to having. Some medications can cause your food to taste tinny or metallic. We will do everything possible to provide you with tasty, appealing, nutritious foods that are allowed on the diet as prescribed by your physician.
Food Allergies/Food Intolerances
If you have specific food allergies (foods that may cause an allergic reaction such as: rash, swelling, or difficulty breathing) please notify your nurse. High allergen foods may contain but not limit to: tree nuts (walnuts, pecans), soy, strawberries, milk, fish, peanuts/peanut butter, eggs, and wheat.
If you have a food intolerance (specific food you do not tolerate) i.e. lactose, gluten, acidic foods, please notify your nurse. The Nutrition Services staff will provide alternate choices of foods for patient safety.
Information
If you have any questions about your diet please ask your nurse to contact the Nutrition Services Department or dial ext. 1806 or 1807 or 343-6800 from home. If you are a patient, a Nutrition Services Representative will be available to answer your questions.
